It was so sad to read all the recent Alice Munro obituaries and yet also so celebratory of a deservedly loved and renowned writer. In particular, her refusal of applause and her determination to painstakingly observe the detail and epic scale of life within her short stories. Now that Word Factory has migrated to Substack, I’m hoping we can all be in touch about writing’s little details more often. I am writing this in the quietness of a kitchen somewhere in the south-west and thinking how rich life within the Word Factory is and continues to be. So here’s something to share and savour - a flavour of The Munro Conversation: Jon McGregor and Chris Power discussing Alice Munro at the Word Factory which it was a pleasure to host. Hope you enjoy our rather unusual evening - an intense and entertaining discussion of Munro’s story, Chance. (Find it in the New Yorker) An evening where we introduced the Word Factory hooter courtesy of Tom Conaghan of Scratch Books … enjoy!
